A printable cleaning checklist puts your daily, weekly and monthly tasks on one page with boxes to tick. Print this page with your browser’s Print command (Ctrl+P, or Cmd+P on a Mac), stick it on the fridge, and tick as you go.

It is part of our cleaning schedule and checklist guide. The reasoning behind each list is in the daily cleaning checklist and the monthly cleaning schedule.

What order should you use the checklist in?

Work through each room in the same order every time:

  1. Clutter first. You can’t wipe a counter covered in mail.
  2. Top to bottom. Dust shelves and fan blades before surfaces, surfaces before floors.
  3. Dry before wet. Vacuum before you mop.
  4. Floors last, ending at the door. You won’t walk over what you just cleaned.

Across the home, start with the kitchen and bathrooms, since they need the most time, and finish with the bedrooms and hallways.

How long does each section take?

These are our estimates for a small or medium home kept up week to week. A home that has been left longer will take more time.

Section Time (our estimate)
Daily list about 10 to 15 min a day
Weekly zone about 20 to 30 min a day
Monthly task about 30 to 45 min once a week
Full room-by-room clean about 2 to 4 hours

How to print this checklist well

  • Use your browser’s print preview. Ctrl+P on Windows, Cmd+P on a Mac. Check that tables don’t split across pages.
  • Turn off headers and footers in the print settings for a cleaner page.
  • Print only what you need. Most browsers let you choose page numbers, so you can print just the daily grid.
  • Try landscape if the daily grid looks cramped.
  • Want a ready-made PDF? The free daily cleaning checklist on this page is laid out for printing.

What to add for a deep clean

The lists above keep a home in shape week to week. A few times a year, add the jobs that regular cleaning skips:

  • ☐ Wash walls and doors where hands touch them
  • ☐ Pull out the fridge and stove and clean behind them
  • ☐ Clean inside kitchen cabinets and drawers
  • ☐ Wash curtains, pillows and duvets
  • ☐ Clean light fixtures and lampshades
  • ☐ Descale showerheads and faucets
  • ☐ Clean window tracks and screens
  • ☐ Shampoo or spot-clean carpets and upholstery

Spread these over a month, one or two per weekend, so they never take a whole day.

Paper or digital checklist?

Compare Printed checklist Digital checklist
Visible all day Yes, on the fridge Only when you open it
Ticking feels satisfying Yes, a pen mark Depends on the app
Easy to edit Reprint or cross out Edit anywhere
Shared with a household One copy in one place Everyone sees the same list
Resets each week New printout or dry-erase Usually automatic

Plenty of people use both: paper on the fridge for the daily list, a screen for the bigger plan.

Example: a filled-in week

One household’s sheet on Thursday morning:

  • Daily: dishes ticked Monday to Wednesday, laundry ticked Monday and Wednesday, clutter missed Tuesday.
  • Weekly: kitchen and bathrooms ticked, floors moved to Thursday evening.
  • Monthly: week 2, baseboards not started. Planned for Saturday.

A box that stays empty week after week tells you the task is in the wrong slot.

Look at the sheet at the end of each week before you print a new one. If floors keep sliding to Thursday, give them Thursday for good. If the monthly task never gets done, pick a smaller one or split it across two weeks. The checklist should match the week you actually have, not the week you planned.

How to use a printed checklist

  1. Cross out what doesn’t apply. No dishwasher, no carpet, no kids: strike the line.
  2. Write names next to tasks if more than one person cleans.
  3. Put it where you’ll see it. Fridge, inside a cabinet door, by the laundry.
  4. Print a fresh one each week, or slip it into a sheet protector and use a dry-erase marker.
  5. Move tasks that keep getting missed to a day when you have more time.

If your brain stalls on cleaning

A printed list helps, but some days it just sits there on the fridge. If you have ADHD, or simply freeze when you look at a full page, try these adjustments:

  • Fold the page so only today’s section shows.
  • Timer chunks. Set 5 minutes for one line. Stop when it rings if you want to.
  • Write the first physical move next to a task: “spray the sink” instead of “bathroom”.
  • Body doubling. Tick boxes while someone else is in the room or on a call.
  • A “goes elsewhere” basket. Collect stray items first, put them away at the end.
  • Lower the bar. One ticked box is a good day.

The ADHD cleaning checklist splits each room into 5-minute chunks. If you’d like the same lists on a screen, our cleaning planner (Google Sheets + Excel) has short daily lists that you check off as you go, and the boxes reset for each new week.

FAQ

What are some essential chores for a housecleaning checklist?

Dishes, counters, laundry, trash, toilets, sinks, the shower, floors, dusting and bed sheets. A good printable groups them by how often they need doing, so you only look at today's part.

What is the correct order to clean a room?

Clutter first, then top to bottom: dust, surfaces, floors. Vacuum before mopping, and finish at the door.

What is a good schedule for housework?

A daily reset of about 10 to 15 minutes, one zone per weekday, and one deeper task per week of the month. The checklist on this page uses the same layout.

How to create a cleaning checklist?

List the rooms you clean, write 5 to 8 short tasks per room, and sort them into daily, weekly and monthly. Put them in the order you'd do them, cross out anything you never actually do, and keep the result on one page where you'll see it every day.

What is a professional house cleaning checklist?

It is the room-by-room list a cleaning service works from: dusting high to low, kitchen surfaces and appliance fronts, bathrooms scrubbed and disinfected, floors vacuumed and mopped, trash emptied. What's included varies by company, so ask for their list before booking.

What are 10 things I should clean weekly in my home?

Toilets, sinks, the shower or tub, mirrors, the microwave and appliance fronts, old food in the fridge, vacuuming, mopping hard floors, dusting, and bed sheets. The weekly grid on this page spreads them over seven days.
